Conímbriga
Região de Coimbra · Portugal
One of the largest excavated Roman settlements in Portugal, Conímbriga has been the country's most visited archaeological site and holds a National Monument classification dating to 1910. The walled urban site preserves a forum, basilica, thermal baths, aqueducts, and elaborately decorated domus, with mosaics and artefacts — coins, surgical tools, ceramics — displayed in the on-site Museu Nacional de Conímbriga. Occupation here stretches back to the 12th–9th centuries BCE, with the settlement growing into a Roman city after the rise of Augustus. It is currently a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status.
