Nicaragua's second most economically significant city, Chinandega sits in the country's Pacific lowlands within easy reach of the coast, with volcanic peaks visible from the city. Known informally as "Ciudad de las Naranjas" (City of Oranges), it serves as a commercial and agricultural hub whose surrounding region produces sugarcane, peanuts, shrimp, and distilled liquors. A UNESCO World Heritage site lies within the wider region, and the city has its own airport.
