A district on Istanbul's European shore with a history reaching back to the 7th century BC — when it was known by the Greek name Athyras — Büyükçekmece sits along the Sea of Marmara coast west of the city centre. Büyükçekmece Lake draws water-sports visitors, and the seafront is a summer destination. The district also holds Turkey's tallest TV tower and the TÜYAP exhibition centre, one of the country's largest trade-fair venues, alongside a largely industrial economy.
