Pocket-sized village in the Barcelos municipality of Portugal's Minho province, Barqueiros sits on the water and holds a notable concentration of historic churches for its size. Its annual Festa da Senhora das Necessidades, held each September, is considered one of the most impressive festivals in the Minho region. The village also carries a significant chapter of recent history: in the 1980s it became the centre of nationwide protests against kaolin mining, a conflict known as the Guerra dos Caulinos.
