Town on the Aegean coast of İzmir Province, Aliağa has a walkable centre with cafés and restaurants, a large port handling oil and bulk cargo, and an economy built around shipbreaking and an oil refinery alongside tourism. Mountains lie close to the east, and the wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites. The ancient city of Pergamon (Bergama) borders the district to the north.
