Founded in December 1882 by Romanian Zionist immigrants, Zikhron Ya'aqov sits on the southern tip of the Carmel ridge in Israel's Haifa district, with views over the Mediterranean coast below. One of the earliest settlements of the First Aliyah — established just months after Rishon LeZion — it has a walkable historic centre with a café and restaurant scene, and the wider Carmel region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
