A compact parish in northern Portugal's Douro wine country, Vilar de Maçada sits along the river in the Alijó municipality, ringed by UNESCO World Heritage landscape in the wider region. The village was briefly an independent municipal seat between 1834 and 1853, and is noted as the place where former Portuguese Prime Minister José Sócrates was registered at birth in 1957.
