This modest town in Latvia's Vidzeme region, Vangaži sits between the Gauja River and the A2 highway, northeast of Riga. It grew up as a workers' settlement around a reinforced-concrete construction factory and a gravel quarry opened in 1955, gaining town status in 1991. Its name derives from a Livonian phrase meaning "place of the stream meadow."
