Cambodia's former royal capital for nearly 250 years, Udong served as the seat of Khmer kings from 1618 until 1866, and the hilltop of Phnom Oudong still holds a royal necropolis of stupas and Buddhist shrines built across several centuries. The site sits a short drive northwest of Phnom Penh, at the foot of a prominent bisected ridge. In 1917, King Sisowath ordered inscribed steles placed before the royal stupas there.
