Taunggyi, the highland capital of Myanmar's Shan State, is known across the country for its annual hot air balloon festival, held on the full moon of Tazaungmon, and for a live-music culture that has earned it the informal title of Myanmar's City of Music. Set high in the mountains with views over surrounding valleys, the city has a walkable centre with cafés, restaurants, and a concentration of historic churches, and sits a short drive from Inle Lake.
