Sysmä

Finland

On the eastern shore of Lake Päijänne, roughly midway between Jyväskylä and Lahti, Sysmä is a little Finnish lakeside town that draws a large summer population — its resident count more than triples in the warmer months. Summer events include the Sysmä Suvisoitto music festival and the Sysmä Book Village Days. The municipality's name is thought to derive from an old word meaning either "dark forest" or "uninhabited wilderness."
