Nicaragua Madriz

Somoto

Madriz · Nicaragua

Somoto Canyon, a dramatic gorge about 13 km west of the city, has made this northern Nicaraguan town a growing destination for travellers passing through on the Pan-American Highway near the Honduran border. The compact centre has a concentration of cafés and restaurants, and the town is also known for rosquillas somoteñas, crispy corn biscuits produced here in a range of flavours. Somoto serves as the capital of the Madriz department and carries the local nickname "Flor del Henequén" for the henequen cultivated in the surrounding hills.
