Walkable city in Nicaragua's mountainous north with a centre full of cafés, restaurants, and historic churches, Estelí sits on the Pan-American Highway and is known locally as the "Diamond of the Segovias" — a nickname coined in 1960 by Óscar Corea Molina on his radio programme. Nicaragua's third-largest city, it serves as the departmental capital and makes a practical base for the surrounding highland terrain.
