Smederevo

Serbia

Smederevo's medieval fortress, built in 1430 by the Serbian despot Đurađ Branković on the Danube's right bank, was at the time the largest lowland fortress in Europe — and it still stands in this eastern Serbian town that twice served as the capital of the last independent Serbian state before Ottoman conquest. The compact centre has a real café and restaurant scene, and the town is equally associated with iron production and winemaking.
