Founded in 1778, San José de las Lajas is the capital of Cuba's Mayabeque Province, a town with a centre that holds a concentration of historic churches. The Carretera Central bisects the town, which sits within a cattle-farming and industrial zone south of Havana. The wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
