Samatya
Istanbul · Türkiye
This Marmara Sea-side quarter of Istanbul's Fatih district, Samatya has an unusual concentration of Christian churches for its size — including the Armenian Surp Kevork Kilisesi, built before the Ottoman conquest, and two Greek Orthodox churches — alongside a historic bazaar where fishmongers are a fixture. An annual fish festival fills Samatya Square each year. The quarter's well-preserved historic streetscape has drawn film crews, including for Nuri Bilge Ceylan's award-winning film Üç Maymun.
