Salt has shaped Salins-les-Bains since the fifth millennium BC, and the town's historic saltworks — added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2009 as an extension of the Royal Saltworks at Arc-et-Senans — remain the main draw today. This small Jura town sits along the valley of the Furieuse river, overlooked by two forts, and has operated a thermal spa since 1854. Vineyards lie nearby, and a modest central core offers cafés and restaurants.
