Haute-Saône · France

This village on the banks of the Ognon river in Haute-Saône holds membership in Les Plus Beaux Villages de France and carries a dense concentration of listed monuments, among them a medieval wall, a castle, the church of Saint-Hilaire, and a royal house. The settlement grew on a rock above the river in antiquity, and iron forges established in 1660 brought a period of prosperity. A nautical base on the river adds a practical draw alongside the heritage.
