Rosia Montana
Romania
Romania's oldest documented gold-mining settlement, Roșia Montană in the Apuseni Mountains of Transylvania dates to at least 131 AD and carries a Roman mining landscape now listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The state gold mine closed in 2006, and a subsequent proposal to open a new mine was rejected in 2014 after large-scale protests; the site has since been classified as a historic site of national importance, with industrial activity prohibited.
