Papar
Malaysia
A district capital in Sabah, Malaysia, a short drive south of Kota Kinabalu, Papar sits on the banks of the Papar River close to the sea, with the Crocker Range rising inland. The town is a stop on the Sabah State Railway — including the North Borneo steam railway tourist service — and its surroundings remain largely paddy fields and fruit orchards worked by a diverse mix of Bruneian Malay, Kadazan-Dusun, Bajau, and Chinese communities. The wartime Papar railway bridge, little changed since the Second World War, featured in Allied covert operations to retake North Borneo from Japanese forces.
