Italy's easternmost town, Otranto sits on the Adriatic coast of the Salento peninsula in Apulia, with a café and restaurant scene that holds a surprising number of options for its size. The old quarter clusters around a Norman cathedral and an imposing castle, and the town was recognised as a UNESCO Cultural Heritage site in 2010. The nearby lighthouse at Punta Palascìa marks the most easterly point of the Italian mainland, and the surrounding coastline falls within a regional natural park stretching south toward Santa Maria di Leuca.
