Small town in the lower Salento area of Apulia, Ugento sits on the site of the ancient Messapian city of Uxentum and holds an unusually high concentration of historic churches for its size, alongside a central core with cafés and restaurants. The town has a small harbour on the Gulf of Taranto and a stretch of Ionian coastline, and was recognised by the Puglia region in 2008 for its architectural, archaeological, and environmental heritage.
