A compact Portuguese town in the Viseu district with a waterside setting and a central core of cafés and restaurants, Oliveira de Frades is known as the capital of free-range chicken in Portugal, with an annual town festival in July that closes with a public showcase of the local dish. The municipality is one of the few in Portugal whose territory is non-contiguous, split into two separate portions.
