Planned from scratch on the left bank of the Sava river in 1948, New Belgrade has grown into the central business district of Belgrade and of the wider region, with a dense concentration of cafés, restaurants, and modern commercial infrastructure along the waterfront. What began as an uninhabited floodplain is now one of Serbia's most populous municipalities, offering riverfront access and a contemporary urban character distinct from the historic city across the water.
