Saffron has defined Navelli for centuries — this compact hilltop village in Abruzzo's Gran Sasso massif produces the DOP-certified L'Aquila saffron, among the most prized in Italy. Medieval in origin and listed among I Borghi più belli d'Italia, Navelli sits on a ridge commanding views over the plateau that shares its name, alongside the hamlet of Civitaretenga, both rooted in territory once inhabited by the ancient Vestini people.
