This modest Galician town in a sheltered valley among the northern outliers of the Cantabrian Mountains, Mondoñedo has an unusually high concentration of historic churches for its size and a compact centre with cafés and restaurants. Once the capital of one of Galicia's seven historic provinces until 1833, it retains a strong architectural character and belongs to the association Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España — Spain's most beautiful villages network.
