Lord Byron died here in 1824 during the Greek War of Independence, and Missolonghi carries that history in its official title — the municipality is formally named the Sacred Town of Missolonghi. The town sits between two lagoons on the western Greek coast, with a modest central core of cafés and restaurants and a concentration of historic churches. Mountains rise close by inland.
