This university town in north County Kildare, a short drive west of Dublin, Maynooth is home to two significant institutions of higher learning: Maynooth University and St Patrick's College, Ireland's sole Roman Catholic seminary and a Pontifical University. The town also serves as the seat of the Irish Catholic Bishops' Conference. For its size, it has a strong café and restaurant scene and a notable concentration of historic churches. The Fitzgeralds held a castle here from the 12th century, and a college they founded in 1518 was later closed during the Tudor reformation.
