Mariefred
Sweden
Gripsholm Castle, a royal fortress on Lake Mälaren, anchors this little Swedish town a short distance west of Stockholm. The town's name — meaning "Peace of Mary" — derives from a former Carthusian monastery, and the centre holds cafés and restaurants along the waterfront. The East Södermanland Railway keeps a museum here with one of the finest collections of narrow-gauge passenger railcars of its kind, and the German author Kurt Tucholsky is buried in the town cemetery.
