Saint Ignatius of Loyola spent a year in a cave near this Catalan city in 1522, writing the foundational text of the Spiritual Exercises, making Manresa a place of Catholic pilgrimage to this day. The city sits at the confluence of the Llobregat and Cardener rivers, with a medieval centre built around the Gothic basilica of La Seo, alongside baroque churches and modernista buildings. It also marks a stage on the Catalan Way of St. James and lies close to Montserrat.
