Founded in 1849 in the heart of Colombia's coffee-growing Zona Cafetera, Manizales sits on the Central Andes with views toward the Nevado del Ruiz volcano. The city is a major centre for Colombian coffee production and hosts several universities, giving its walkable centre a lively café and restaurant scene. It is also known for the Feria de Manizales, an international theatre festival, and a bullfighting fair, with UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider region.
