The capital of Mayotte, a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean, Mamoudzou sits on the main island of Grande-Terre with a walkable centre full of cafés and restaurants and a concentration of historic churches. The town looks across a short channel to Petite-Terre, the smaller island where the airport sits, and has mountains close by inland.
