This walkable city in eastern Uruguay with a café-filled centre and a notable concentration of historic churches, Maldonado is the capital of its department and sits within a conurbation alongside Punta del Este and San Carlos. Its official name, San Fernando de Maldonado, reflects its colonial origins, and its residents are known locally as fernandinos.
