Lustenau
Austria
This Rhine-side town in Austria's westernmost state of Vorarlberg, Lustenau sits on the river that forms the border with Switzerland and offers a walkable centre with cafés and restaurants. Once a free imperial estate of the Holy Roman Empire until 1806, it joined Austria only in 1830 and grew through the 20th century into a centre of the Vorarlberg embroidery industry. The town is also known locally for its distinctive dialect and its annual church fair, the Kilbi.
