This small town in the Hérault department of southern France's Occitania region, Lodève sits at the confluence of several rivers and offers a compact central core with cafés and restaurants, set within Mediterranean wine-growing country. Its ancient name derives from the Gaulish word for mud or swamp, a reference to the clay-rich terrain that supported pottery-making in antiquity. The surrounding area includes natural zones of ecological interest, with mountains close by.
