Lielvārde
Latvia
A tiny Latvian town on the right bank of the Daugava river, Lielvārde sits around an hour's drive southeast of Riga in the Vidzeme region. One of the oldest settled sites along the Daugava, it developed near the mouth of the Rumbiņa stream, where a Livonian hill fort and the Archbishop of Riga's medieval castle once stood. The modern town grew up around a railway station on neighbouring Rembate parish land and gained full town status in 1992.
