Kragujevac
Serbia
Serbia's first modern capital, Kragujevac sits on the Lepenica River in the heart of the Šumadija region, with a walkable centre dense with cafés and restaurants. The city proclaimed the Sretenje Constitution in 1835 — the first constitution in the Balkans — and served as the Serbian capital from 1818 to 1841. It carries a darker history too: a 1941 Nazi massacre killed thousands of Serb men and boys. Today the city is also known for its Zastava Arms and Fiat Serbia industries and the University of Kragujevac.
