Kozani is a university city in northern Greece's Western Macedonia region, known across Greece for its saffron production — grown in the nearby town of Krokos — and for a walkable centre with a dense food-and-drink scene. Set in highland terrain between several mountain ranges, it also hosts a winter carnival rooted in ancient Dionysiac traditions. The city sits between Thessaloniki and Ioannina, with its own airport a short distance from the centre.
