Founded in 1783 by Mir Sohrab Khan Talpur as the seat of the former princely state of Khairpur, this Sindh city is now Pakistan's best-known centre for date-palm cultivation, alongside crops of sugarcane, cotton, and tobacco. It joined Pakistan in 1955 and today hosts Shah Abdul Latif University among its several colleges. Mountains are visible from the city, and water is within easy reach.
