Once the medieval capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Kernavė is a little settlement on the right bank of the Neris River whose archaeological site earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2004. Five hill forts rise above the surrounding landscape — known by names including Pilies kalnas, Aukuro kalnas, and Mindaugo kalnas — offering elevated views over the river valley. A Lithuanian state cultural reserve was established here in 1989.
