A city on the Osumi Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, Kanoya is informally known as the "Town of Roses" and sits close to both the coast and the mountains of southern Kyushu. The area's warm climate supports active farming of black pork, broiler chicken, peanuts, and sweet potatoes, and the city is home to the Japan Institute of Sports Sciences' university campus and a Maritime Self-Defense Force air base.
