This compact town in southwestern Lithuania near the Polish border, Kalvarija holds a notable cluster of religious architecture: the Church of the Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in 1840, a synagogue complex, and a Lutheran church. Two monuments removed during the Soviet occupation — a 1928 independence memorial and a 1935 monument to the Lithuanian Mother — were both restored in 1989. The town is designated an urban heritage monument.
