Straddling the Kali Gandaki River high in Nepal's Mustang district, Jomsom is the main gateway for treks into Upper Mustang and up to Muktinath, with Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri as a mountain backdrop. The town serves as a hub for the Annapurna Circuit and the Jomsom-Muktinath Trek, and has regular flights connecting it to Pokhara. Along the riverbanks, black fossilised stones called shaligram — considered sacred in Hindu tradition and said to be found only in the Kali Gandaki — can be collected.
