Isernia

Isernia · Italy

One of the earliest documented Palaeolithic settlements in Europe, Isernia is a town in the southern Italian region of Molise with a compact centre carrying cafés, restaurants, and some listed heritage architecture. In antiquity it was a prosperous Samnite city and later a Roman municipium; it was awarded a gold medal for civil valour following heavy bombing in the Second World War. The province itself dates only to 1970.
