A waterfront town in South Holland, Hellevoetsluis sits on the Haringvliet with sea, beach, and dunes close by, and a walkable centre with cafés and restaurants. The town's name translates as "lock at the foot of the Helle," a reference to a small local river that has since disappeared. It lies on the southern edge of the Rijnmond and Europoort areas, near the broad Zeeland landscape, and is the largest settlement in the municipality of Voorne aan Zee, formed in 2023.
