Founded in 1510 along the historic road connecting Central Europe and Anatolia, Harmanli is a south-central Bulgarian town in Haskovo Province, set on the water and within sight of mountains. The area carries deeper history still: near the town, the early 4th-century Battle of Mardia was fought between the Roman emperors Licinius and Constantine the Great during the Cibalensean War.
