A hillside village in Tuscany's Grosseto province, Gavorrano sits on the northern slope of Monte d'Alma in an area historically defined by large pyrite deposits, mined intensively until the early 1980s. The village is associated with Pia de' Tolomei, whose fate Dante recounts in the Purgatory cantos of the Divine Comedy, and is the birthplace of the writer and Italian patriot Giuseppe Bandi.
