Sitting at the southern foot of Mount Fuji with its city limits stretching from Suruga Bay to just below the mountain's summit, this mid-sized Shizuoka city occupies a striking position between sea and Japan's highest peak. The city has long been a centre of paper manufacturing, drawing on the abundant water sources of the Fuji River and the mountain's groundwater, and still produces a substantial share of Japan's toilet paper.
