A compact town on the Drina River in southeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, Foča sits at the edge of mountain terrain near the oldest national park in the country, Sutjeska. The town once held a dense Islamic architectural heritage — eighteen neighbourhoods, seventeen mosques, and a historic bazaar — largely erased during ethnic cleansing in 1992–1994. Today it is home to faculties of Istočno Sarajevo University, including a Medical Faculty and an Orthodox Theological Faculty.
