The ancient port city that once served as Pergamum's gateway to the sea, Elaea stood on the Aegean coast of what is now İzmir Province in western Türkiye. Founded, according to tradition, by the Athenian leader Menestheus, it minted coins bearing his image and was a member of the Delian League. The silted remains of its breakwater are still visible on satellite maps near modern Zeytindağ, and the wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
